The Reverend Lynn Carter-Edmands

Rector

The Rev’d Lynn Carter-Edmands came to Columbus in August of 2006 to be the rector of St. James Church. A native of California, she earned her B.A. in history from California State University at Fullerton. She received her Master of Divinity degree from The General Theological Seminary in New York City, was ordained Deacon and then Priest in the Diocese of Rochester, and served parishes in the Rochester, NY area. Mother Lynn then spent three years as Chaplain at a boys prep school in Pawling, NY, and taught courses in Ethics, Bible, and Religion. Prior to her call to St James, she was the rector of St Andrew’s Church in Lewisburg, PA for nine years.

 

Mother Lynn has served as a member of the Standing Committee, the Commission on Liturgy and Church Music, the Commission on Ministry, the Ecclesiastical Trial Court, and the Board of Examining Chaplains in the Diocese of Central PA. She also chaired the Department of Ministry in Higher Education for two years and served for a year as the convener of the Bishop’s Council of Advice there. In Southern Ohio she is a member of the diocese’s Commission on Congregational Life and also currently serves as chair of the Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations Commission and as Ecumenical Officer of the diocese.

 

She resides in Clintonville with her husband, the Rev’d Frank Edmands, and their dogs Sophie Lorraine and Ruby Lucille.

 

Mother Lynn is usually in the parish office Tuesday through Friday mornings and is available for conversation, the Reconciliation of a Penitent (sacramental confession) and/or prayer at other times by appointment. The Reverend Douglas Argue

Deacon

 

Deacon Douglas Argue joined the staff of St James in June of 2008, having spent the prior year and a half with the congregation as he completed his diaconal training.  At St James Deacon Douglas oversees the congregation’s work of service to the community and the world.  He also supervises our Eucharistic Visitors and liturgical ministers.

 

Deacon Douglas currently serves as the Managing Director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO). In this role, Douglas’ main responsibilities include advocating and providing technical assistance for safe, decent and affordable housing for low-income and special needs populations across the state of Ohio. He has been working in the field of homelessness and housing for 13 years. Douglas serves on the Policy Team of the Interagency Council on Homelessness and Affordable Housing, is the co-chair of the Research and Policy Workgroup of the Council, Co-Chair of the Ohio Balance-of-State CoC; is a member of the Ohio Justice Alliance for Community Corrections board, and serves on various other homeless related work groups in the state. His previous work includes being the shelter director for Daybreak in Dayton, a homeless youth shelter; serving as the director of housing and emergency assistance for an AIDS service organization in Indianapolis; practicing as a psychiatric social worker serving both adult and youth populations in inpatient and outpatient settings; and, doing managed care for mental health and substance benefits for an insurance company. Douglas earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana, holds a Masters of Social Work from Indiana University and is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in the state of Ohio. Douglas was ordained a deacon in June 2008.

 

Douglas currently offers limited times for therapeutic counseling. He has both evenings and weekend hours available in his office located at St. James. If you are interested in learning more about this, please contact him through the church office. There is a fee for this service, which is negotiated with Douglas.

The Rev'd Elise Feyerherm

Transitional Deacon

 

The Rev’d Elise Feyerherm joined the clergy staff of St James in June of 2009, following her ordination to the transitional diaconate.  Her part-time commitment here allows her to focus her time and efforts on Christian Formation for all ages. Although we are used to having her around and have enjoyed her ministry among us for the past few years, she now exercises her ministry among us in the context of a new relationship to the Church sealed by the sacrament of ordination.

 

Deacon Elise will continue her ministry as a member of the faculty of Bexley Hall Seminary, one of eleven seminaries of the Episcopal Church. At Bexley Hall she is professor of Ascetical Theology and Ecclesiastical History, and has taught classes in spiritual practices, Celtic Christianity, and Early and Medieval Church History. She has also taught classes in Religious Foundations and the Bible locally at Capital University and Old and New Testament at the Pontifical College Josephinum. She holds a Master of Divinity from Yale University Divinity School and a PhD with an emphasis in Church History and Systematic Theology from Boston College.

Timothy Smith

Organist-Choirmaster

A native of Cape Cod, Timothy Smith earned music degrees from Wheaton College (Illinois), Northwestern University and The Boston Conservatory, where he was the first graduate awarded the Artist Diploma in Organ Performance. His concert career has included a dozen appearances at annual conventions of The Organ Historical Society, several of which have been rebroadcast nationally on Pipedreams, and two appearances with The Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa.  He released three compact discs last year on the Raven label, including a program of French music entitled Pipes and Angels, recorded in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

 

As a church musician, Mr. Smith has led enthusiastic volunteer and professional choirs, conducted numerous works for chorus and orchestra, and played for churches in a variety of denominations in Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Tennessee, including two worship services for regional conventions of The American Guild of Organists. As an organ builder and consultant he has worked with clients in several states, revitalizing older pipe organs in dynamic new designs. Currently he is an associate with Peebles-Herzog, Inc., a pipe organ service firm managing the care of over 280 instruments in five states.

 

Tim is the founder and Executive Director of The Portageville Chapel, America’s first retreat for organists, located alongside the Grand Canyon of the East in western New York’s Letchworth State Park. The Chapel, opening in the spring of 2009, features an 1841 restored meetinghouse, equipped with a two-manual pipe organ and a concert grand piano. Available for weekly rental, full accommodations for performing artists are provided nearby for organists to renew their artistry in a setting of unparalleled natural beauty.
